Who covers costs?

Each person transported by ambulance is responsible for the costs of their transportation. However, if you live in Quebec and are eligible for one of the programs listed below, your transportation costs may be covered.

Transportation for persons 65 years of age and over is free where necessary for medical or social services purposes.

To find out more about the transportation policy

Please consult the transportation policy of the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec to determine whether you qualify for one of the exceptional assistance programs.

Other cases that may qualify for reimbursement

Crime victims

As a crime victim, you may qualify for reimbursement. You must submit your claim to the Crime Victims Compensation Program (IVAC) (PDF). Urgences-santé cannot, under any circumstances, submit a direct claim to IVAC.

Persons injured while performing an act of good citizenship

You may be eligible for reimbursement if you submit a completed application (PDF) to the Crime Victims Compensation program (IVAC). Urgences-santé cannot, under any circumstances, submit a direct claim to IVAC.

Foreign nationals new to Canada

Under the Canadian government’s Interim Federal Health program, foreign nationals receive a visitor record that gives them access to health care services. You must provide the record (Form IMM 1442) to Urgences-santé in order to claim reimbursement from the federal government.

Claims to insurance companies (individual and group plans)

Urgences-santé cannot submit claims directly to insurance companies. The transported person must pay for transportation and then submit a claim to their insurer, and include the bottom half of the invoice.

Canadian non-residents

Note to non-residents: Ambulance transportation services are independent of hospital services, and are not included in the amount billed for healthcare services.
